[ESS] ESS speaks to me in German

For some reason, starting today, ESS speaks to me (partly) in German.
Not sure what I did to provoke this change, but I would like to undo it and go back to English.

Here is a brief example output from just after loading R into Emacs:

I spent some time trying to find a fix in the internet, like “Setting the Language Environment”,
but nothing has worked so far.
