Actually, Martin, you probably get 5.3.10 from CRAN, since I also  
maintain an up-to-date ESS as part of the R packages for Ubuntu (http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/ 
). If I recall correctly, it was Doug Bates who asked for this a few  
months ago.
