Yes, that's too old and has the bug.
But why are you not using the 'ess' package from ubuntu
which is "5.3.10-1" which I think is a prerelease of 5.3.10
(i..e simply "sudo apt-get ess") ?
Or then get the 5.3.10 sources from the ESS download page and replace
your 5.3.8 with it.
