Yes, you may well.

It's a newer -- but not so new -- feature of ESS,
that we've quite a nice piece of code that guesses at all
possible version of R installed in the current environment, 
and BTW, also makes them available via the menu,
e.g.  [ESS] --> [Start Process] --> [Other]
for me (on Linux or Solaris) lists more than 20 different versions
of R which I all have installed 
   {yes I know, this may sound a bit crazy, 
    but sometimes its neat to be able to just start R
    version 1.2.1 or 1.8.0  because someone claims something about
    that version of R ... }
