Creating '_' in S/R modes

   I like the feature of converting a typed '_' to '<-'.  However, for various
   reasons I sometimes *want* to create the underscore character.  Would be
   possible to preserve the current behavior translating a single typed
   underscore ('_') into '<-' while translating two consecutive underscores
   ('__') to '_'?
   
You can do ^Q _ (quoted-insert) to insert an underscore.
