Creating '_' in S/R modes

If you want a "_" in an R buffer, why not try the Emacs convention of
using the C-q prefix (quoted-insert).  e.g. C-q _ gives me an
underscore in an R buffer, whereas _ on its own gives me the left
arrow.

Just an idea, and may be of a more general use for people in many
other modes.
