configuring R with Xemacs

Can anyone help with the following...?

I've just downloaded and installed Xemacs (version 21.1.9) for windows and I
would like to try and use it for R, so I've also downloaded ESS 5.1.18.
I've read the instructions on installation etc... with regards to ESS and
followed the steps for using Xemacs on windows 95. i.e. I've included the
path to the Rgui executable in my autoexec.bat file, I've added the line
(load "c:/ess-5.1.18/lisp/ess-site/") to my _emacs. Though I am no fully
sure where this file need to be, I've put it in the directory containing the
Xemacs executable and rebooted my pc. (I'm using R-1.2.3 as well for
windows)

I've then tried M-x R to get R up and running and nothing happens, all I get
is [no match]
I've scanned the various FAQ's and readme files, but they are relatively
unenlightnening.

As I've never used Emacs extensively before (as I usually use winedt or vi)
I'm not sure where to proceed from here.
Any tips?

Thanks
