problems with transcript files

All,

I'm using ESS 5.0 on s sun sparc10 OS 5.6 with splus 3.4. Today, I
thought I'd learn about transcript files (*.St) to help me better organize
my splus sessions. My intention is to have a record of my daily splus
sessions that I can write comments to, edit, submit commands to the S+
process, etc. I don't necesarily want to edit the previous days' record
(sort of defeats the purpose of a daily record), but I do want to continue
to use the same file for a period of time with the flexibility to edit the
current session's transcript with comments, etc. This is what my
impression of a transcript file is for.

Okay, so I put (seq ess-ask-about-transfile t) in my .emacs file and start
up ESS. Whether I give the name of an existing .St file or an new .St
file I get the message

Buffer is read-only: #<buffer new2.St>

and I cannot type anything (because the buffer is read-only). And, I
can't seem to get to my S+ process. What am I doing wrong? Any
suggetions?

Thanks,

Jarrett
