Rather slow completion

I am running Emacs 20.7, ESS 5.1.18, R 1.2.3.
I am just starting to go through the ess manual, and have found that object
name completion to inordinately slow. It can take 20-60 seconds to complete
a data.frame name, and doesn't always seem to work right, even after running
ess-resynch.
Any thoughts?
