[ESS] Questions on Section 3.3

1) In Section 3.3 on
http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/ess.html#Multiple-ESS-processes the
command 'C-x f /ssh:user at host: RET' is mentioned. Shouldn't C-x f be
C-x C-f (via find file) or C-x d (via dired)?

2) When I then (= after 'C-x C-f /ssh:user at host: RET') fire-up R via
M-x R, nothing happens (the minibuffer remains frozen at the state
shown in the attached screenshot; R is not started). Here is what
*Messages* shows:

Tramp: Opening connection for user at machine.com using ssh...
Tramp: Sending command `exec ssh -q -l user -o ControlMaster=auto -o
ControlPath='tramp.%r@%h:%p' -o ControlPersist=no -e none machine.com'
Tramp: Waiting for prompts from remote shell...done
Tramp: Found remote shell prompt on `machine.com'
Tramp: Opening connection for user at machine.com using ssh...done

Thanks & cheers,
