[ESS] ESS from Emacs launched from Cygwin Shell

normally it just works.  what are you doing?
That is, what do your .emacs and your site-start.el look like.

The note you quote might be a clue.

Start emacs from the runemacs icon.  Don't start emacs from a cygwin shell.

Then when you need a shell inside emacs, M-x shell will start the cygwin shell
as an inferior process if you have set the environment correctly.
