Hi Martin,
I've been following this thread nervously, as I have Emacs 24.3.1
on my Mac, though with ESS 12.09
ESS version 12.09-2 [rev 5395 ]
GNU Emacs 24.3.1 (x86_64-apple-darwin, NS apple-appkit-1038.36)
 of 2013-03-10 on bob.porkrind.org
I have had rock-solid performance for months, no crashes at all,
so I suspect you are right in considering ESS 13.x as the potential problem.

Interesting.   What (exact) version of ESS?  (M-x ess-version)
Honestly, I've seen the same.. very sporadic indeed .. in recent
days/weeks ... and start to
suspect that  it has to do with ESS ...
