Thank you Stefan.

Note that I'm pretty sure the @w{..} not for protection against a line
wrap around,
but rather for the time we had some  RCS / CVS / SVN    $Id: ...$ or
$Date: ...$   as part of the version.
And the @w{.} protects the '$' against TeX..
..
something we currently do not need indeed.
