[ESS] Emacs crashes when commenting code in ESS mode

(or later...)   But yes, I suffered from the same phenomenon.
and no,  C-g  nor any other mean did help, for me, neither.
 Killing emacs had been the only horrigble "solution".

Upgradig to the latest released version of ESS, 12.09-2  does solve
the problem, indeed.
