[ESS] ESS hangs emacs on start-up

That commit does nothing except renaming some variables. It is very
unlikely to be the culprit. Are you sure? 

Can you reproduce the problem with emacs -q and then execute:

 (add-to-list 'load-path "~/path/to/ESS/lisp/")
 (load "ess-site.el")

?
