[ESS] .emacs file seems not fully operative since upgrade from 22.3 to 24.3

Did you build it yourself or did you use a Debian package for emacs?
The reason that I ask is that Debain does weird stuff with the load-path,
etc.  I only use packages for applications that I don't understand.
That way, the weird configuration doesn't bother me since I don't know
any better.
