[ESS] problem installing ess

Hi,

I'm trying to install ess 12.09 on Solaris 10 10/09 s10s_u8wos_08a for SPARC.  The installation directory is /opt/sfw/share/emacs/site-lisp/ess-12.09/.  Whether I add:
(load "/opt/sfw/share/emacs/site-lisp/ess-12.09/lisp/ess-site")
or
(require 'ess-site)
to my ~/.emacs file, I do not go into ess mode.

If I am in emacs and I type:
M-x ess-mode
or
M-x ess-site
I get
[no match]

However:
M-x tex-mode
works fine.

It seems that my copy of emacs does not know of the existence of an ess mode even after installing it but my copy of emacs can switch into other modes.

Please can you tell me what I am doing wrong?
