Well, it's either an OS issue or an emacs issue. I just tried it on
Windows XP with VirtualBox. And F12 is defined there, but I don't
remember if that was because VirtualBox is helping (I submitted a
bug report about Fkey behavior on VirtualBox at one point).
But, either way, it's not an ESS issue. Sorry.

No worries. You helped me over the major hurdle and have pointed me in
the right direction to figure out F12. In the meantime though, I will
