Very weird.  When I do that it tries to launch evince which crashes. 
M-n p runs ess-swv-PS which says...
Create a postscript file from a dvi file (name based on the current
Sweave file buffer name) and display it.
Huh?  Who is doing that nowadays?  There is also M-x ess-swv-PDF but 
that doesn't work either...
Create a PDF file ('pdflatex') and display it
 From which I get...
Type X to quit or <RETURN> to proceed,
or enter new name. (Default extension: sty)
