But you can go about it a simpler way. It's clumsy compared to what
you can do in Linux, but with Windows, I find it easiest to associate
file type *.R to GnuEmacs so that in Windows Explorer, you just click
on the file name (make one to keep your R code in the right directory
if you don't already have one) and you automatically have Emacs in the
right directory so there's no need to change.  

Part of the charm of ESS is that it comes with the charms of Emacs.
In particular, dired is very useful where you can change directories
to your heart's content without getting out of GnuEmacs.
