[ESS] options don't work -- Problem solved!

Hi Terry:

Well, I'm glad you found it.  But, this sounds weird to me.  I don't see
why you need the ess-mode-hook when you didn't previously.  I suspect 
there is a bug some where in the new Ubuntu (or whatever it is) distro. 
  You should file a bug report with them.  Maybe somebody else who uses 
that could comment (that is certainly not me).
