[ESS] options don't work -- Problem solved!

  No one had a direct answer, but by looking at the .emacs files given
in response I finally saw the problem.

In the current emacs/ESS environment my "(setq whatever)" statements
need to be inside an ess-mode-hook; in prior ones they could be global
variables, which is what I had.
I've added the enclosing statements and now all is well.
