Hello Richard,

thank you for your reply.

Correct, the version 5.2.11 is used and I can start an R process by
typing M-x R.
However, after upgrading to ESS 5.3.3 and adjusting the pathes, the
problem remains:

in .emacs:

(load "c:/emacs/emacs-21.3/site-lisp/ess-5.3.3/lisp/ess-site")
(setq-default inferior-R-program-name "C:/R/R-2.4.0/bin/Rterm.exe")

when I byte-compile ess-site.el, I do obtain the following message:

Compiling file c:/emacs/emacs-21.3/site-lisp/ess-5.3.3/lisp/ess-site.el
at Wed Oct 04 15:06:35 2006
** The following functions are not known to be defined:
    find-load-file-directory, ess-s-versions-create

Do you have any further thoughts?

Best,
Bernhard
