Dear list members,
I finally decide to migrate to linux, therefore I bought a new laptop
(ibm Z60t) and dive into this world.
After years of Windows (from 3.1 for dos!!) I feel myself like after a bike
accident. I have to do re-learn how to walk.

I'm trying hard, but it is quite satisfying to see that you can have such a
complete control over the machine.

For everyday work on stat I'm still using XEmacs + ESS under win 2000.
I'm used to the buttons "line" "para" "region" from Prof. Fox, and I would
like to install a similar environment on linux, but I realize that this will
be a very demanding task to me
(I still need to be in the lab,
teach and write papers in the meanwhile !! ).

But still I'm experimenting with linux.
I did the following on linux (as root)

yum install Xemacs

and I've been following the instuctions on
http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/readme.html#Unix-installation

I've downloaded ess-5.3.0.tar.gz

put into a directory (/mnt/linwin/....../ess) and run the command

tar -xvf ess-VERSION.tar.gz

receiving a lot of
"Impossible to do chown a uid 2110 and gid 300. Operation not permitted"

Where am I wrong ?

Thanks to you all for such open source world !!!!
