[ESS] Emacs windows and Interactive SAS

It seems that ESS must first be invoked before loading 
essd-sas-3window.el. If I add the line
     (load-file "essd-sas-3window.el")
to .emacs I get an error on startup:

      An error has occurred while loading `/home/usr13/chooper/.emacs':
      Wrong type argument: keymapp, nil

Is there an easy solution to this problem, or have I messed up somehow?
