[ESS] byte-compile-file ess-site.el error

That's a really weird error.

less importantly, you don't have to byte-compile/make (though it does
provide a slight speed-up).

Could you try byte-compiling ess-site.el by hand, i.e.

M-x byte-compile-file

and see if you get the same error?
