[ESS] byte-compile-file ess-site.el error

I am trying to install ess-5.2.10, downloaded from 
http://ess.r-project.org/downloads/ess/. When I try to byte-compile the 
file ess-site.el I get the following error message:

Compiling file /Users/freeman/site-lisp/ess-5.2.10/lisp/ess-site.el at 
Fri Oct 28 15:38:47 2005
ess-site.el:68:1:Error: Search failed: "(load-file "

I am running:
GNU Emacs 21.3.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.4.0).
  of 2004-05-29 on darkstar.local

I've searched the web, but haven't found a clear explanation of this 
issue. Any suggestions from members of this list are are greatly 
appreciated.
