I was very confident that I hadn't done any such thing and so hadn't
thought that removal through properly. You're quite right and I did
turn up a few things in /documents and settings/ and in a /.xemacs
folder on C: so I've deleted them all. I also searched the local
drives for xemacs*.* and deleted everything and I searched the
registry for xemacs and ditto ... then I rebooted and installed
xemacs again with the internet installer downloading from the French
ftp site (seems more reliable than the UK one).
I relaunched xemacs and ... same thing. Both the cmd.exe and the
launching of R.
Now I've done a bit more sleuthing as at least this does seem to be
the installation default for xemacs installed using the windows
installer under windoze 2k.
The default init.el is:
c:/documents and settings/administrator/.xemacs/init.el
and that turned out to be where the rogue lines were: a whole lot of
elisp code that looks like it was all or part of an earlier ess-
site.el file. Removed that and the ESS directory that the xemacs
install had added and put the latest ESS (the directory unpacked from
the zip file is named 5.2.6 but the "Read ESS Info" info
documentation says 5.2.3) one in instead and read the instructions
with that (which were the ones that Richard Heiberger gave here
yesterday) and they created a new init.el just saying (load
"c:/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/ess/ess-site") and now I have the
shell working and R not loading at launch and it looks as if my
problem with the graphics display has also gone away.
Fingers crossed and thanks to everyone here.
One question out of this for me: should the xemacs default ess be
upgraded to the current version? It does seem to be way behind at
present.
