Dear Scott,
I haven't seen this particular error, but I am aware of a problem in
ess-site.el. There's a fix (and some instructions) on my web site, at
<http://socserv.socsci.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Books/Companion/ESS/index.html>.
Have you looked at this?
I hope this helps.
John
