I see

In this case I get the same error messages, and
"Type C-h-m for help on ESS version 5.2.2" appear in the echo area.
It is the same as
(load "c:/Programmi/Emacs/ess-5.2.2/lisp/ess-site.el")

>(load "c:/Programmi/Emacs/ess-5.2.2/lisp/ess")
In this case it seems to work, a message flashes saying 
"Loading c:/Programmi/Emacs/ess-5.2.2/lisp/ess-site" done

but at the end in the echo area is written
"Type C-h-m for help on ESS version 5.1.21"
