Xemacs locks up during computationally intensive tasks

Hi, 

I am using R version 1.8.1 and Xemacs version 21.4; April 2001, both
installed as standard debian packages, the ESS version is 5.1.24.

I usually split the screen horizontaly, using one window for an R file
and running commands in another.  However, sometimes when I run
something that requires intensive computation, the whole Xemacs
freezes up and refuses to react to any keycommands or even the menu (I
can open the menu via tha mouse, but commands have no effect).

I can't even see the output from my commands.  After the computation
is done, things get back to normal.

How could I avoid this?  I tried renicing the R process, but that
helps very little.
