Problem starting S in xemacs

Hello!

I'm new to ESS. I just downloaded ess-5.1.24 and customized the
ess-site.el file to run Splus 6 for Linux (as far as I did understand it).  
I use Xemacs 21.4.

When I want to start Splus I get the following message:

Symbol's value as variable is void: comint-process-echoes

and that's it!

I looked for an answer in the ess-help archives, but I could not find any.
So, is there anybody who can help me?
