minimial Xemacs for ESS?

I use ordinary latex mode for latex.

Fundamental mode is fine for ascii files. But most likely you aren't
editing undifferentiated ascii files. For R you will be using .r and .rt
.files and will want ESS. For .tex files, emacs automatically puts them
in tex-mode or latex-mode (depending on the absence or presence of
a \documentstyle statement near the top). Similarly most of your files
are intended for a specific language or package and the mode that would be
best is the one targeted for that language.
