opening graphics devices using ESS under Windows NT

There is no satisfactory solution. The S-Plus GUI is required for interactive
graphics. When you use M-x S+4 or M-x S+6 you get the GUI running as an
independent process that can accept text input from emacs. The commands window
in S-Plus records the interaction. You can write myfile.s and send lines and
regions over to S-Plus. You get no text back. You can highlight a region in
the S-Plus commands window and drop it into a myfile.st buffer in emacs.
You get full interactive graphics.

The alternative M-x Sqpe+4 or M-x Sqpe+6 gives you a normal text interface
inside an emacs buffer. You do not have interactive graphics. S-Plus does
not provide interactive graphics except through the GUI.

The next release of S+6 has a java graphics device that is supposed to provide
interactive graphics to the Sqpe user. I have not yet tested this.

The only graphics you have with Sqpe is static. You can open a postscript
device, or other static device, and write to it. Then close the device and
view the graph in ghostview. Reopen it with a different filename to modify
the plot.
