can't break a calculation anymore

In the previous version of emacs 21, I could break calculations with ctrl-c
ctrl-c.

Perhaps I just need to go back to the old version.

my memory says this is a bug in emacs 21.  I tried hunting the archives
for the email that discussed this, but no success.
