Hi Rich,
I got the distribution from sgi freeware site. When I installed the emacs 21.1. the time stamp of the .el file is newer than the .elc.
I did the following. It looks like working.
1.Get the emacs 21.1 from gnu. compile it.
2.cd ess-5.1.21, gmake
3. add (load "/cbl/schen/tmp2/ess-5.1.21/lisp/ess-site") in ~/.emacs
4. Both my previous emacs(got from SGI) and my compiled emacs can work with R.
I don't know why when I do it without compiling. It gave me a coredump.
Appreciated the help.
Sanjun

I am worried about the messages from the emacs itself
Source file `/usr/freeware/share/emacs/21.1/lisp/emacs-lisp/ring.el' newer than byte-compiled file
Why are you getting those messages? It makes me think that you have an
inconsistent emacs distribution. Did you load a newer emacs into a
directory that had a previous version?
Rich
