Error message: "No ESS process is associated with this buffer now"

greetings,

I'd like your help in resolving this error message:  "No ESS process
is associated with this buffer now"  I'm running ESS 5.1.20 from within
Xemacs 21.4.8 on a Windows 2000 computer.  I am using R-mode (R 1.5.1).  
When I write a function in one xemacs window, I get the error message 
above when I try to load it into another split window (by typing C-c C-l).  

I'm not sure why a null value for the process would be returned, since
the process is running in the orginal window.

Can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong, and how to correct it?
