ESS and splus6

We're having some difficulty getting ESS (ver 5.1.21) / Emacs (ver 21.2)
to link in with splus6 in a windows environment.
An _emacs file with the following lines has been created:
(load "c:/Emacs/emacs-21.2/ess-5.1.21/lisp/ess-site.el")
(setq-default inferior-S+6-program-name
"V:/splus6/server/cmd/SPLUS.exe")
and the path to splus6 has been added to the windows path statement.
Emacs loads without error.
After starting splus6 and typing s+6-existing I get the following
prompt:
ESS [S(S+6): sh] starting data directory? ~/emacs-21.2/bin/
Whatever path I enter at this point returns the message:
Cannot read history file <path>/.S+6history
apply: Searching for program: no such file or directory, sh
Although an splus6 buffer shows in the buffer list, there doesn't seem
to be any link to splus6 - a message informs me 'process s+6 is not
running'.
Any assistance appreciated.
