ESS and loading files in Sqpe+6

I am running ESS 5.19.1, under Emacs 20.6, NT 4.0.  When I run Sqpe+6,
rather than Splus I find that loading functions, through C-c C-l, either
takes a long time or it kills Sqpe.  This doesn't happen when I run Splus,
in this case C-c C-l loads the file almost instantly in Splus.  I know that
not everyone uses C-c C-l, but I find it very handy when developing, or
upgrading, S+ functions, which I do a lot.

Any insights welcome,
