I don't use xemacs, so use Rodney's information.

On evaluating a lisp statement from within *scratch*:
the message you got about a variable looks like you didn't rmember to
use the parentheses, which are the statement delimiters.  This is
again gnu emacs information
 (setenv "HOME" "d:/rmh")
Place the cursor immediately after the closing parenthesis and end enter
C-j

You might want to check what the system thinks your HOME variable is.
do so with 
(getenv "HOME")
in *scratch*, again by entering C-j after the close paren.
