R-mode is used for editing files in the R dialect of the S language.
R-mode is automatically turned on in buffers with .r extensions.

inferior-ess-mode for the R language (iESS [R]) is used for the buffer
in which the R process is running.  You must explicitly start the R
program with M-x R.

Since editing a file and running a program are two very different
actions, we have provided two separate modes in emacs for them.
