slow R start-up

Dear All,

I'm using ESS 5.1.18, win98 (766 Mhz, 256Mb Ram), emacs20.7, R 1.2.2
When I start R from emacs (M-x R ) it takes a long time to start. It's very variable, about 25-30 seconds, but sometimes (generally the first time I open R in the day) almost 1 minute.
In a terminal window it takes about 4 seconds (I've got a .Rdata of about 22Mb).
As emacs gave me an error (about "ess-loop-timeout" ) I changed the variable value from 500000 to1000000, but it's still slow and sometimes it still give me the same error.
