thanks for the tip. weird, i "C-x C-e" the "load" line to load "manually" and
rebooted, and from then on things seemed to work. so i don't really know what i
changed but things work now. par for the course with an MS OSs. ;-)
as for my unusual directory structure, NTEmacs "lives" under TeX becajuse that's
the default fpTeX installation. i agree that your hierarchy is sounder and safer.
thanks too for the suggestion on defining HOME to be something other than c:/.
