Problems installing ESS on Sun Solaris with XEmacs 21.1

Hi
Thanks for helping me get ESS installed. I'm back to having a decent working
environment for Splus again!
One question I did have was about the possibility of using ESS as a way round the
problem of memory in loops. I am not too sure what the deal is with memory in Splus
- I was told by my econometrics professor that running large simulation loops on
Splus eats memory very quickly. I checked the S newsgroups and it seems that this
is caused by Splus keeping a backlog of undo information. It occured to me that it
should be possible to get around this by using macros within ESS.
I set up a C-x e macro to repeat the last command (which sourced my loop file). I
then used C-u 100 C-x e to repeat this macro 100 times. However, I noticed from the
ps command that the memory used by splus was still increasing linearly. I am not
sure if this is by as much as it would have had I run everything in a loop, but it
still increases.
Do you have any suggestions as to how to get around this memory problem -
especially ones that use ESS in the solution!?
Two final questions : help does not seem to work (claims that reporter could not be
loaded). Is this just a case of installing another package (like was done with
comint)? The other question is why the auto complete does not work for me, even
after resynching. Is this a mistake in the way I (or the system administrator)
configured ESS?
Thanks again for your help
