I'm trying to install ESS-5.1.16 under Win2k and Emacs 20.6 for use
with R 1.1.1.

I've pondered the readme files, ess-site.el, and the various
makefiles, as well as an Emacs and Perl books, and came to the
conclusion that I didn't need to edit the directory info in these
files (thought I'm not clear about SHELL=/bin/sh in Makeconf, I have B
Ripley's unix tools in a d:\unix tools directory) and could run

make

as per the installation instructions. I get the error message below
that looks a problem with the compiled lisp directory(?). Obviously
I'm pretty low on the learning curve for these unix tools so any help
is much apprecpriated.

D:\emacs-20.6\site-lisp\ess-5.1.16>make
