sequencep problem

I am installing ESS 5.1.16 and XEmacs to 21.2 on LinuxPPC.  When I try
to start R in XEmacs, it fails to start and I get the following
message:

Wrong type argument: sequencep, 1

This happened about a year ago on different systems and the fix that
Tony sent then involving editing ess-inf does not work now.  I attach
the backtrace from XEmacs:
