^M in Stata

I just installed Stata 6 for DEC Alpha. In ESS, Stata 6 includes ^M (the
carriage return symbol) after every line, both lines that I submit and
those that Stata returns. I would like to prevent the appearance of the
^M's. This doesn't happen in ESS with either SAS for DEC Alpha or for
Stata 5 for Linux.
BTW, unix uses only line-feed (^J) for new lines while Windows/DOS uses
carriage-return line-feed (^M^J) for new lines. I know how to make the
^M's go away afterwards with replace-string, but I would like to prevent
their appearance. Thanks very much.
Sincerely,
