M-x SAS was designed to simulate an interactive SAS interface. It is similar
in behavior to the SAS-supplied window manager (except that it runs under
emacs). It sounds like you want to run a batch interface under emacs.
I would suggest you use the batch interface that is included in ESS
instead of the M-x SAS.
You can run SAS in batch mode from ESS using the function keys if you add
the following line to your .emacs
(ess-sas-global-unix-keys)
This gives you
[f2] 'ess-revert-wisely
[f3] 'ess-sas-submit
[f4] 'ess-sas-goto-sas
[f5] 'ess-sas-goto-log
[f6] 'ess-sas-goto-lst
[f7] 'ess-sas-goto-file-1
[f8] 'shell
