I agree that there is much left to be desired in R's current connection
framework. An external I/O package could be one route, although the
additional dependencies and parallel system are not advantages IMO.

This is something that I have some interest in pursuing, but cannot
promise that I will have either sufficient time or support of other R
folks to make it happen.
