Thank you for your kind answers
The problem is solved. As Alex mentioned it was a problem of SAGA more than RSAGA and the binaries I had installed. It appears that neither Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center install an all functional SAGA GIS. Repositories defined there may miss something.
I downloaded the sources and compiled from scratch following up instructions from Sourceforge net:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/saga-gis/wiki/Compiling%20a%20Linux%20Unicode%20version
Took a while but it pays off.
I smiled when I read
> rsaga.esri.to.sgrd(in.grids="DEM25m.asc", out.sgrds="dem25m.sgrd", in.path=getwd())
error: module
library path: /usr/local/lib/saga
library name: libio_grid
module name : Import ESRI Arc/Info Grid
author : O.Conrad (c) 2007
Parameters
Grid: [not set]
File: /home/alberto/grassdata/DEM25m.asc
Target Grid Type: Floating Point (4 byte)
NoData Value: Input File's NoData Value
User Defined NoData Value: -99999.000000
Save grid: dem25m.sgrd...
ready
And was then able to perform further analysis with it.

Asunto: [R-sig-Geo] RSAGA not runing all functions under Linux Ubuntu Natty
Hola Alberto,
the short answer is that this doesn't seem to be an RSAGA problem but a
SAGA GIS problem; however, since you are using SAGA GIS 2.0.4 I would
first recommend updating to the most recent release before submitting a
request to SAGA's sourceforge forums.
I tried to reproduce the error with RSAGA 0.92-2 and SAGA GIS 2.0.4 (as
well as 2.0.7 - both on Windows, however) and did not get an error.
Interestingly, I also get "Grid: [not set]" but then "Save grid:
test.sgrd..." and the SGRD was in fact saved correctly.
So maybe there's an issue with the linux binaries you are using...
In any case it can't really be an RSAGA error since you are getting the
same error when running the module from the command line? (saga_cmd is
not part of RSAGA but of SAGA GIS)
I hope updating to SAGA GIS 2.0.7 will resolve this issue. Good luck! If
not, please report to SAGA's sourceforge project, and don't hesitate to
get back to me if you do find any issues with RSAGA on Linux.
Best,
Alex
